With the certificate program “Shaping Knowledge Together”, UniverCity Bochum and the RUB Research School have launched a new, inspiring format that brings together universities and the municipality to explore new ways of working together. In a time of transformation, the program creates space for shared learning and fresh perspectives on how to shape knowledge-based urban development.
Launched in May 2024, the program brought together around 40 stakeholders from 22 different academic disciplines and areas of expertise. In six interactive, full-day workshops, participants engaged with topics like open innovation, design thinking, co-creation, and knowledge-based urban development — always focused on the pressing challenges of a city in transition.
The goal: to foster collaboration between science and city administration and build bridges across sectors and institutions. Through hands-on methods and reflective dialogue, participants explored how different perspectives and practices can come together to address shared challenges.

city2science was part of the journey from the beginning, contributing conceptually and facilitating several workshops. Together with our co-facilitator Dr. Verena Molitor, we supported participants in developing ideas, connecting across disciplines, and shaping a shared language between science and practice.
For us at city2science, the program was an energizing and rewarding experience. The openness, creativity, and commitment of the first cohort made it truly special — and we’re already looking forward to planning the next round!
city2science empowers cities and regions by supporting them in designing participatory processes, strategy development, and capacity building at the interface of science and society.
